Shirley Cheng’s New Autobiography Reveals Truth Behind Headlines of Juliet Cheng’s 1990 International News Custody Case with Doctor
Wappingers Falls, NY (PRWEB) July 13, 2005
Fifteen years after her mother’s victory over injustice, Shirley Cheng (http://www.shirleycheng.com), a blind and physically disabled author of three books, has authored her 700-page autobiography, “The Revelation of a Star’s Endless Shine: A Young Woman’s Autobiography of a 20-Year Tale of Trials & Tribulations,” to tell the world the horrific trials and tribulations experienced by both her mother and herself, revealing many pitfalls in American medical and school systems. Along with the eye-opening accounts, Shirley shares words of encouragement and enlightenment, telling others that there will always be light at the end of the dark tunnel.
In July of 1990, on the morning of Friday the thirteenth, Shirley Cheng, a seven-year-old child with severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, was forcefully and wrongly taken away from her mother Juliet Cheng by Connecticut Child Protective Services. The reason for the custody loss? Juliet did not agree to have Shirley operated on six of her joints at once when Shirley did not even have any medicine to control her inflammation. The five-month custody battle between the mother and the doctor–and her victory–gained international attention and support. The case was reported on The Associated Press, The New York Times, Newsweek; and Juliet and her lawyer–a former mayor of Hartford, Connecticut, for eleven years–appeared on CBS This Morning.
Replete with fifty photographs, “The Revelation of a Star’s Endless Shine” unveils the gripping, never before told tale of child prodigy Shirley Cheng–a blind and physically disabled victim and survivor of severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) and more so of falsehood in American medical system–and her loving mother, Juliet Cheng. Enter a world of terrors, struggles, dreams, and triumphs in this true life story spanning twenty years as mother and daughter travel the world seeking care and compassion. From Shirley’s painful diagnosis of JRA as an infant and the 1990 international news of Juliet’s victory over injustice in her custody case, to their acceptance of a harsh and devastating fate, and the elation of Shirley’s various academic and personal achievements, this autobiography will leave the reader inspired and thinking twice about life’s true values and meanings.

Selected reviews of “The Revelation of a Star’s Endless Shine”
“Why is it possible in America, the land of the free, that a parent cannot disagree with a doctor’s recommendation for treatment? If they do, their child could be taken from them. Social Services can be called in. How could it also be possible for a hospital to take parents to court for intercepting unwanted treatment?” asked Christina Francine for Reviewer’s Bookwatch on Midwest Book Review. “Well, in this great nation supposedly run by the people for the people, parental rights aren’t what they used to be. We all know people who neglect or abuse their children and intervention is necessary for them. This is not the same.”
“Shirley’s unique way of writing further provides readers with a window to her intelligence, insight, and nature. Her matter-of-fact, original style and ability to prove a point is powerful.”
“She reveals how some doctors lie on their patient’s documents and when cannot offer a solution or diagnosis for a disease often label the victim as mentally ill or depressed. She tells of instances when in a hospital, a staff member turned on her room light in the middle of the night waking her to clean the room, and of when they wouldn’t help her sit to relieve her bladder.”
“The state of our medical, insurance, and parental rights needs a severe overhaul.”
“A disturbing, and enlightening read. Authentic, honest, and profound. Will change reader’s outlook.”
“The Revelation of a Star’s Endless Shine truly lives up to its title,” said Rebecca Henderson for AllBooks Reviews.
“It’s a story of amazing courage and human strengths, for someone to achieve so much, after having being deprived of so much is an awe-inspiring feat,” wrote editor, author, and teacher Angela Hooper, Spain.
About Shirley Cheng
Shirley Cheng (b. 1983), a blind and physically disabled author and poet of three books by age twenty, was diagnosed with severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at only eleven months old. Due to years of hospitalization between America and China, she received no schooling until age eleven. Having achieved grade level in all areas after about 180 days in a special education class in elementary school, she was transferred to a regular sixth grade class in middle school. Ever since, she had been a high honor student, and her high school overall average is 97 (3.9 GPA with no AP factors). Unfortunately, Shirley lost her eyesight at the age of seventeen. After a successful eye surgery, she hopes to earn multiple science doctorates from Harvard University.
Shirley now advocates parental rights in children’s medical care to help today’s loving parents protect and keep custody of their ill children. When doctors ask yes or no, parents should have the right to say no.
Shirley Cheng is also the author of “Daring Quests of Mystics,” and “Dance with Your Heart: Tales and Poems That the Heart Tells” (ISBN: 1-4116-1858-0). She had been published twice before her writing career.

Dr. Gary Poehling always tries to treat patients with the least invasive option possible in order to not disrupt the patient’s life. A patient with arthritis in the knee may start with anti-inflammatories or injections. If these fail, surgery is usually the next step. MAKOplasty Partial Knee Resurfacing is an innovative surgical option for adults living with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis. During the procedure, the diseased portion of the knee is resurfaced, sparing the patient’s healthy bone and surrounding tissue. An implant is then secured in the joint to allow the knee to move smoothly again. MAKOplasty offers many benefits to patients, including less scarring and pain, shorter hospital stays, and a quicker recovery. San Francisco Dentist Dr. Itani Visits Patient in Home on KRON 4 News
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) June 18, 2012
San Francisco dentist, Dr. Samer Itani of Itani Dental, will appear on KRON 4 News today, June 18, and periodically during the upcoming months with segments about Itani Dentals Bay Area in-home dental visits (Dentistry to Your Door) and sleep and sedation dentistry services.
Many times patients are unable to visit us in our office for a number of different reasons, said Dr. Itani. We get calls from parents, relatives or caregiverswho want us to provide home care dentistry services because its much simpler to treat certain patients in their homes.
In a previous KRON 4 segment that aired last month (http://youtu.be/4egeqPqwSXU), Dr. Itani discussed similar topics. During tonights segment Dr. Itani will demonstrate his Dentistry to Your Door services in a live visit with an immobile and wheelchair-bound patient who receives a comprehensive dental exam and digital check-up x-rays.
Accompanied by his dental hygienist and portable equipment, Dr. Itani can perform a variety of services during his home care visits, including general dentistry (like exams and cleanings), digital x-rays, fillings, oral cancer screenings, removal of infected teeth and denture repair.
Lea, the patient featured in tonights segment, has been treated by Dr. Itani since 2007. Her rheumatoid arthritis progressed to such a serious degree that she experienced debilitating motion limitations and Sjogrens syndrome. Sjogrens syndrome results in dry mouth, or xerostomia, that can be so severe that it leads to rampant tooth decay.
Patients with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis often experience immobility issues that cause suffering when sitting for a certain period of time, or during traditional transport and movement to a doctors office for treatment, said Dr. Itani.
A couple of years ago, Lea tried to reach treatment at Dr. Itanis office, but was unable to get from her car to the office, even with assistance. On that occasion, Dr. Itani examined her in her car. In tonights segment, Lea gets an exam, x-rays and follow-up to be sure no further cavities have developed.
For patients who require extensive work or anesthesia, Itani Dental can arrange transportation from their home to a hospital setting, or to the Itani Dental office, depending on their special needs. Dr. Itani provides his unique Dentistry to Your Door services throughout the Bay Area, from San Rafael to Concord to Walnut Creek to San Jose.
Candidates for in-home care range from the homebound elderly or those in a nursing home, to people who are in the hospital or wheelchair bound, patients with special needs such as cognitive or physical disorders, and patients who struggle with dental phobias.
